Dear esteemed Miss Addams,
A year ago, when you gave me permission through Miss Smith, to translate your book ‘Twenty Years’, I endeavoured that my thank you would be the finished translation. It is complete; but I cannot send it to you as I have not found a publisher. I now seem [page 2] to be able to reach an agreement with a Berlin publisher. Now, I have another favour to ask of you; to agree that the German edition of the book will be published without illustrations, only with your portrait, the enclosed portrait which Dr. Alice Salomon gave me and which she had cut out of ‘Life and Labor’. May I ask you for the photograph from which this image is copied? [page 3]
Because, I fear, the portrait Dr. Alice Salomon gave me, will not make a good reproduction.The publisher insists on omitting the other images because they would raise the price of the book to a level which would prevent the distribution of the book in Germany.
The Winter program of the Sozialen Frauenschule in Berlin has just been published, Dr. Alice Salomon is its director; it advertises a course, ‘Problems of Social work, based on Jane Addams’ book, Twenty Years at Hull-House’.
That which moved and enthused us, who are familiar with your book, will now be made available to wider circles. May it bear fruit. I cannot finish without thanking you again that you allowed me to work on your book. From the first to the last day, I have not stopped being grateful. Sending you greetings
