Biographical Text

Kate Waller Barrett was prominently known in state and national politics and had held several positions. Barrett was active in women's suffrage movement and served as the vice-president of Virginia Equal Suffrage from 1909 to 1920. With the help of a wealthy New York businessman Charles Crittenton, she founded the National Florence Crittenton Mission. The main objective of this mission was to provide health care and education to unwed mothers. After Charles Crittenton's death in 1909, Barrett served as the president of the mission. In 1924, Barrett addressed the Democratic National Convention in New York. She was put forward as the candidate for the Governor of Virginia which she declined.

Barrett married Reverend Robert Barrett in 1876. The couple had six children. Barrett died in 1925.
