Biographical Text

Charles Sumner was a Massachusettes senator and lawyer. He was a part of the anti-slavery movement, and represented cases which challenged the legality of segregation. As a senator, his abolitionist views were barely acknowledged within the Senate. When the Civil War eventually broke out, Sumner served as chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations, and was part of the Radicals faction of the Republican Party, constantly advocating for emancipation. During the Reconstruction Era, he advocated for equal civil and voting rights for freedmen, and worked to block ex-Confederates from power.

Sumner married Alice Mason Hooper im 1866. In 1867, they separated, and in 1873 they divorced. Sumner died of a heart attack in 1874.
