My dear Mr. Tippy:
It is with genuine regret that I decline your kind invitation to speak before The Federal Council of The Churches in America. I have already taken so many speaking engagements for the fall that I have been obliged to decline everything, at least until after January 1st. I am sure you know how much I admire the work of the Council and how intriguing your invitation is.
Perhaps you will give me a chance some year when there will be no presidential campaign and other unusual reasons for much public speaking.
With cordial greetings to your daughter and yourself, I am faithfully yours,
Jane Addams [signed]
