My dear [Miss] Addams:

I suppose this letter will reach Hull House when you do.

One evening I came home from a trip down state & found a package -- when I opened it & found your book I felt like a child with a Christmas present.

I cannot make you [page 2] understand how precious a thing that book is -- not only because of its content & ↑because↓ of the memories it stirs but all through as I read it I seemed to hear your voice.

I shall preserve it among my most valued treasures & leave it as a precious heritage to my children that they may remember that their mother had the high privilege of calling Miss Jane Addams "friend." With sincere love

Lena B. Mathes
