My dear Miss Addams:

I must write and tell you how deeply I have been interested in your new book. I have found much that was suggestive and helpful in your "Democracy & Social Ethics" but this book seems still more convincing in its preaching of the gospel of human sympathy. It helps to explain a good many things in a piece of [page 2] work I am now attempting -- on the Negro question. I am trying, by getting at the truth, to lay, perhaps, some real basis for discussion. I don't know whether you will be interested or not but I am venturing to send you a copy of our April number don't assume the burden of reading it unless you are interested in this phase of the human problem.

With sincere best wishes

Ray Stannard Baker
