Maud Nathan was an activist and social worker. She lived the life of a socialite until the death of her eight-year-old daughter in 1895. On the advice of a friend, Maud turned her attention to women's rights as a way of working through her grief.In 1897, she became president of the New York Consumer's League, which she co-founded, and was an activist for labor regulations. She also spent time lobbying for woman's suffrage with her husband by her side as a fellow activist. She became a noted lecturer, the first woman to speak at a synagogue, and she delivered important speeches at the International Congress of Women in London in 1899, the International Peace Congress in New York in 1907, and the International Woman Suffrage Congress in Stockholm in 1911. Observers described her as an elegant, imposing, and intelligent woman. Along with her activism, she was also an author, writing two books -- Story of an Epoch-Making Movement (1926) about the Consumers League and Once Upon a Time and Today (1933), a history of women.

Nathan married Frederick Nathan, her much older first cousin, in 1880. The couple had one daughter together. Nathan died at the age of 84 after a long illness.
