My dear Mr. Beck:

I thank you very much for your kind letter and for drawing my attention to several mistakes in my interpretation of the incident. A Mr. Marshall of the New York Times, evidently Mr. Ernest Marshall, was the only New York interviewer whom I could remember: I am glad it was not he. Evidently, also, I credited the incident to the testimony of the "other side".

I can only say in my defense that I was in Europe during the trial and was therefore somewhat hazy about it. I should not have brought up the incident save that it was mentioned to me several times, in St. Louis and elsewhere.

Thanking you for your kindness, I am

Sincerely yours,

Jane Addams [signed]
