Biographical Text

Edward Everett Hale graduated from Harvard College in 1839. After he worked as a journalist for the Daily Advertiser while studying for the ministry. He worked as a preacher from 1842-1846 before becoming ordained as a minister and taking up his position at the Congregationalist Church of the Unity in Worcester. Hale wrote short stories and novels and became a nationally known author. He used his writing skills to advocate for causes, chiefly the abolition of slavery. Among his best-known works are The Man without a Country, the tale of a traitor who was banished on a series of naval vessels. Hale helped establish the Unitarian Church of America, an inclusive church that distanced itself from fundamentalism. Hale retired from his post at the church in 1899 to become the chaplain of the United States Senate. He died in 1909.

Hale married Emily Baldwin Perkins in 1852 and had eight children.
