WESTERN UNION
DAY LETTER
May 7th, 1917.
Hon. S. Hubert Dent,
House of Representatives,
Washington, D.C.
MAY I URGE ONCE MORE THAT PROVISION BE MADE IN THE CONSCRIPTION BILL FOR EXEMPTING MEN WHO OBJECT TO MILITARY SERVICE ON CONSCIENTIOUS GROUNDS? ENGLAND HAS SUFFERED MUCH EMBARRASSMENT IN THE IMPRISONMENT OF THREE THOUSAND SUCH MEN WHO COULD NOT FAIL TO RECEIVE MUCH POPULAR ADMIRATION. ONLY THIRTY [PERCENT] OF THE CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS IMPRISONED WERE QUAKERS.
JANE ADDAMS.
