United States Senate,

COMMITTEE ON
EXPENDITURES IN THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE.

February 13, 1917.

Miss Jane Addams,
Chicago, Ill.

Dear Miss Addams:

I have had a letter in my heart for you for a year. When I learned you were ill, then I waited for you to get well, as I knew you would. Your kind of women are not cut off in the general justice of things.

I want to thank you for your unusual and courageous stand. I do not agree with you as to the methods and have a different viewpoint as to our military necessities, but if it were not for people such as yourself, those of my thought and those of the extreme thought, would drive the country too fast and oftentimes to its destruction.

I have your letter and understand your wishes, and hope you will feel free to write me at any time.

Very truly yours,

Jas Hamilton Lewis [signed]
