My dear Miss Shelly:
Miss Addams has asked me to explain to you how the matter in reference to Mr. Richards developed.
As soon as we heard that Mr. Messer had this in charge, we got on touch with him and he told us that he had just wired Mr. Beaver that he could not make arrangements for Mr. [Richards's] visit here. We wired at once to Mr. Beaver, saying that we would arrange for engagements for Mr. Richards and went ahead with our plans in a tentative way, hoping to hear definitely that Mr. Richards could come. Mr. Beaver wired back that plans then being formed in New York might possibly prevent Mr. Richards coming to Chicago and that he would wire us further word on Thursday, on which day we received a definite telegram from him saying that Mr. Richards could not come.
We were greatly disappointed because we hoped very much that we would be able to arrange a good many meetings for Mr. Richards. So many of these speakers from England never get west of the [Alleghenies] and for that reason those who do come to us are particularly welcome.
Please let us know if at any time it seem probable that Mr. Richards can come west and you may count on us to do our best for him.
