Biographical Text

Thomas James Cobden-Sanderson was an English bookbinder and artist. Originally studying law, he took a friend's advice and looked into bookbinding. Taking to it quickly, Cobden-Sanderson set up a binding shop, the Doves Bindery. After partnering with Emery Walker, they created their own typeface, Doves Type, and did well for themselves. The partners had an acrimonious split in 1915, and Cobden-Sanderson threw the punches and matrices for Doves Type into the Thames River, where portions were found in 2015. Cobden-Sanderson died in 1922.

Sanderson married Anne Cobden in 1882.
