Anna Marcet Haldeman to Jane Addams, February 1916

Dearest Auntie --

I have just come in from the observation platform. As we were coming up to the continental divide an engine was pushing us. It was so close I could have put out my hand and touched the great black dragon -- and coming through the [narrow?] canyon it roared so fierce my heart beat fast and I started in. Then I stayed and oh I was glad I had when (after the monster left us) we swooped down down into a [fairy] city of a million lights -- never have I seen such a wonderful sight as my first vision of distant Butte. I love you and I think of you and think of you
