My dear Mr. Kellogg: --
I have made some changes in the manuscript which I hope you will not mind. It is awfully poor at the best and I am cutting it down for the book.
I have had some very touching letters from soldiers. The one I am enclosing came today. If you do not care to use it perhaps you will return it to me. The poem was sent to me by a mother with whom I talked in England; it is written by her son who is fighting in Mesopotamia. She was not specially for Peace when I saw her and it seems touching that she should send me this. It [is] quite worthy of a place in The Survey if you care to have it. I do not feel at liberty to give the name of the mother of the poet. As soon as I can find the time I will get some of the other letters in shape if you think you have any place for such things in The Survey.
In regard to the reviewing of the books, of the list of nine you sent me I have already gone over, more or less carefully, five; but do not believe that I could review them. I am very slow as a reviewer and too uncertain of my own mind. I always seem to be disobliging about things for The Survey but the [page 2] truth of the matter is that I am not a journalist and ought to be dropped from the roll.
