Biographical Text

William Dwight Porter Bliss was an activist, editor, and clergyman. In 1882, Bliss was ordained a Congregationalist Minister. By 1886, he became an ordained deacon of Episcopal Church, and a priest by 1887. From 1887-1890 he served in Boston's Grace Church, attempting to organize an inner-city ministry, the Church of the Carpenter, where he served for four years. During the 1880's, Bliss became interested in the Christian Socialist movement and helped organize the first Christian Socialist Society in America in 1889. He edited the society's publication, The Dawn while also compiling and editing many books, including the Encyclopedia of Social Reform. He served as an investigator for the Bureau of Labor. Bliss died in 1926.
