Biographical Text

George A. Schilling, originally from Germany, moved with his family to Ohio in 1852 due to the Revolution of 1848. In 1865 he moved to Chicago and joined the advertising department of Arbeiter Zeitung, a German-language socialist and anarchist newspaper. Schilling was a member of the Cooper's Union and a prominent member of the trade union movement. He also served a high executive position in the Knights of Labor. Schilling was active in the Labor Party Movement in 1886, and in 1892 was appointed as secretary of the State Board of Labor Commissioners. In 1903 Schilling was appointed to the Chicago Board of Local Improvements and he served as its president from 1905 to 1907. Schilling died in 1938.
