Biographical Text

Robert Hunter was an author and professor. After graduating from Indiana University, Hunter became engrossed in settlement and social work. He became a secretary for the Chicago Bureau of Charities and a resident of Hull-House. In Chicago, he worked with the Municipal Housing Lodge for Vagrants, the city's first free pediatric dental clinic, and the Investigating Committee for the City Homes Association. He published his first book, Tenement Conditions in Chicago in 1901. In 1902, Hunter moved to New York City, becoming the head worker of the University Settlement of the city's lower east side. He led a campaign to enact child labor laws as well as eradicate tuberculosis. In 1904, Hunter published his most important book, Poverty, one of the first statistical surveys of America's poor. In his later life, Hunter lived in California and assisted in redesigning golf courses as well as lectured in politics and economics. Hunter died in 1942.

Hunter married Caroline M. Phelps Stokes in 1903. They had four children, Robert, Phelps, Caroline, and Helen.
