The New York School for the Hard of Hearing was not a school for the deaf (as the New York School for the Deaf was), but a tutorial school for adults who wanted to learn speechreading. I'm not sure what to make of the statement "This became the largest school for the deaf in the United States." NYSD, popularly known as "Fanwood," may have been the largest at the time; that distinction now pertains to the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin.
