Biographical Text

Giuseppe Alia was a recent immigrant from Sicily, who on Febrruary 23, 1908 murdered a Catholic priest, Father Leo Heinrichs, as he administered Communion at St. Elizabeth's Church in Denver. Alia made several conflicting statements about his motivation. He initially claimed that he was an anarchist and hated the Church because it kept down the poor. The police and newspapers publicized this claim, and used it to crack down on anarchists, not just in Chicago, but around the country. There was no evidence linking Alia to anarchism was introduced at trial.

Alia was convicted and executed on July 16, 1908.
