Biographical Text

Edith Hamilton was born in Germany. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College and continued her studies in Germany thanks to a fellowship she received. Hamilton returned to the United States to be head of the Bryn Mawr Preparatory School for Girls. She would later become headmistress in 1906 and work at the school for 26 years. Outside of her work in the education field, Hamilton is known as a Classical scholar, focusing mostly on Ancient Greece. She wrote several books on ancient civilizations and mythology. Her most well-known work is Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes, published in 1942.

Hamilton lived with her partner Doris Fielding Reid for most of her life. They raised Reid's orphaned nephew together. Hamilton died in 1963.
