Biographical Text

"Ludwig" Louis Paul Lochner was a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist who worked for the Associated Press. Lochner studied journalism at the University of Wisconsin and edited the University's Alumni Magazine. A fervent peace activist, Lochner was the secretary of the Chicago branch of the National Peace Federation while Addams was vice-president. Lochner also served as secretary of the Chicago Peace Society and was involved in the American Peace Society. Lochner helped convince Henry Ford to send the Peace Ship at the end of 1915, joined the expedition and, along with Rosika Schwimmer, did much of the planning and publicity for it. Lochner stayed on to become secretary of the Neutral Conference for Continuous Mediation in 1916, working in Stockholm and The Hague. After the Conference ended in 1917, Lochner remained in Europe and by 1918 was working as a journalist for the Milwaukee Free Press and as an editor of the International Labor News. By 1924 he had secured a position with the Associated Press in its Berlin office, rising to bureau chief in 1928. Lochner had access to top leaders in the Weimar and Nazi governments, interviewed Hitler twice, and accompanied the German army on campaigns. He reported on the rise of the Nazi Party and the beginnings of World War II, winning the 1939 Pulitzer for his work as a foreign correspondent. He was interned when the United States entered the war, held for five months, and then freed in a prisoner exchange. Lochner's book, What About Germany?, published in 1942 was extremely critical of Germany. Lochner served as a war correspondent in 1944-1946.

Lochner married Emmy Hoyer in 1910 and they had two children. He married Hilde Steinberger De Terra in 1922. He died in Germany in 1975.
