Biographical Text

Gerard Swope was a businessman and president of the General Electric Company. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While working at GE, Swope implemented various labor reforms. He served as Chairman of The Business Council, Chairman of the Coal Advisory Board, and Chairman of Committee to Study Budgets of Relief Appeals for Foreign Countries. He was also a member of the Industrial Advisory Board of the National Recovery Administration, the National Labor Board, and the President's Advisory Council on Economic Security, as well as numerous other organizations. In 1931, Swope proposed the Swope Plan, a plan for economic recovery. In 1942, Swope was Assistant Secretary of the Treasury. Swope was often invited to Hull-House to teach classes in English, algebra, and electricity. In 1897, he decided to live in Hull-House for a year in order to gain a fuller understanding of the lives of those in poverty.

Swope married Mary Dayton Hill in 1901. They had five children together. Swope died in 1957.
