Biographical Text

William Healy was the director of the Juvenile Psychopathic Institute, the first child guidance clinic in the U.S. He began his career as a physician until 1909 when he became the director of the Juvenile Psychopathic Institute. As director, Healy studied juvenile crime, which led to his publishing of The Individual Delinquent in 1915. His work influenced the fields of child psychology and sex education during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1917, Healy became director of the Judge Baker Foundation of Boston. He also served as the first president of the American Orthopsychiatric Association.

Healy married Mary T. Healy in 1899. They had one child together. Mary died in 1932, and Healy remarried to Augusta Fox Bronner that same year. Healy died in 1963.
