Biographical Text

Elihu Root served as Secretary of State under President Theodore Roosevelt and Secretary of War under both Presidents Roosevelt and McKinley. He attended Hamilton College, where he was a member of Sigma Phi and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. After graduating, Root taught physical education before attending New York University School of Law and becoming a lawyer. As a lawyer, he represented a variety of well-known clients, such as Jay Gould, Charles Anderson Dana, and Andrew Carnegie. President Chester Arthur appointed Root to U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and in 1899 he became the Secretary of War. In 1905, Root became the Secretary of State, and from 1909 to 1915 he served as a U.S. Senator from New York. Root was also president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Root assisted in designing the Foraker Act of 1900, the Philippine Organic Act (1902), and the Platt Amendment of 1901, restructured the National Guard, and supported the Panama Canal. In 1912, Root was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Root married Clara Frances Wales in 1878. They had three children together. Root died in 1937.

As a member of Roosevelt's cabinet, Root's name appeared many times in the letters and writings of Jane Addams in discussions about the Roosevelt administration.
