Biographical Text

Herbert Knox Smith graduated from Yale University and Yale Law School before becoming a Major in the Quartermaster Corps during World War I. He later worked as a lawyer. Smith then ran for governor of Connecticut on the Progressive Party ticket in 1912. He was a close associate of Theodore Roosevelt, serving on his "tennis cabinet" and as Commissioner of Corporations. Smith was also the director of Farmington Savings Bank and the Hartford Empire Company.

Smith married Gertrude B. Dietrich in 1908. Smith died in 1931.
