Biographical Text

Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk was the founder and first president of Czechoslovakia. He worked as a professor of philosophy in the Czech part of Charles University of Prague. Masaryk founded Athenaeum, a magazine devoted to Czech culture and science in 1883. He served in the Austrian Parliament from 1891 to 1893 as part of the Young Czech Party, and again from 1907 to 1914 in the Realist Party, which he founded in 1900. Masaryk went into exile with his daughter Olga in 1914 in order to create an independent Czechoslovakia from the outside. On November 14, 1918, he was elected President of the Czechoslovak Republic, and he was re-elected three times. Masaryk died in 1937.

Masaryk married Charlotte Garrigue in 1878. They had four children, Alice, Herbert, Jan, and Olga.
