Biographical Text

John F. Ransom was a prominent African-American music teacher, musician and journalist who was educated at Oberlin College. He moved to Boston in the 1870s studying piano, and editing an African-American newspaper, the Hub. He did office work for several distinguished business and political leaders, including MA Governor Oliver Ames. He moved to Columbus, Ohio, where he directed white glee and choral groups at Ohio State University and Otterbein College and participated in many choral groups. Between 1889 to 1899, Ransom was the deputy auditor for Franklin County, Ohio. He moved to Chicago in __ where he worked in business and as a vocal instructor. He also served as a member of the Juvenile Protection Association of Chicago. While in Chicago, Ransom stayed at Hull-House and attended psychology courses at the University of Chicago. In 1902, he returned to Boston to resume his music career, and was a member of the Handel and Haydn Oratorio Society and the Boston Conservatory of Music. He taught music at the Robert Gould-Shaw Settlement House until his death in 1938.
