Biographical Text

Charles Francis Mather Smith was a prominent Chicago businessman and philanthropist. He worked as a rail agent for the Illinois Central from 1850-1860 in Decatur, then was promoted to superintendent and moved to Chicago. He joined his brother's paper-making company, Bradner Smith & Co., in 1871 and became president in 1874. Smith was a financial supporter of Hull-House, helping to build the Children's Building and a trustee of the Chicago Art Institute.

Smith married Sarah E. Rozet in 1860. They had three children, Charles Frederic, Mary Rozet, and Francis Anthony Drexel Smith. He died in 1912.
