Biographical Text

Algernon Charles Swinburne was a poet, literary critic, and writer of the nineteenth century. He grew up wealthy on the Isle of Wight, and then spent most of his adult life in London. Swinburne's favorite topics to write about, such as homosexuality and atheism, were controversial for the time and often attracted negative attention. Swinburne's best-known work is the epic poem Tristram of Lyonesse. Swinburne died in 1909.
