MISS JANE ADDAMS IN DEFENSE

Speaks Before Christian Church Ministers of Hull House Work.

"There is a great deal of criticism on the methods and management of Hull House, but such criticism comes chiefly from people who have never been into the community and seen the conditions with which we are laboring."

So said Miss Jane Addams of Hull House to the Christian church ministers at the Grand Pacific hotel [today]. "These settlements have come in response to a genuine need," she said, "and the idea is growing. Nearly every community in a city of this size could support some kind of a settlement, for everywhere there is need of a social center. When I want an example of what a social settlement should be I find myself constantly reverting to the Chicago Commons and the personal work being done by Prof. Graham Taylor."
