What Miss Addams said was this:
"I shall never become Mayor of Chicago -- or of any other city. I do not know enough to become Mayor. I wish to be useful, but I feel sure my friends have been overenthusiastic. I have other fields to enter -- other things besides politics and honors to attain.
"I believe no woman should now undertake the responsibility of such an office. To be just a truly useful executive requires years of training and a remarkably deep fund of knowledge. I have neither this training nor the knowledge and I feel that no woman at the present time is possessed of it. There may be a time when [women] will have been trained so as to serve as well as men, but that time, I believe, is still far from us."
