Dear Miss Addams,
The gentleman who will bring to you this note is Mr Harold Spender, an old Toynbee Hall resident, a below-surface friend of mine, and a man with a fine record of public service.
He wields a brilliant pen which is much in demand, and cares greatly for what you and I both do namely, bringing America and England into closer understanding. I feel sure you will enjoy each other if you can arrange to meet him.
You will be glad to hear that the International Conference of Settlements was a [page 2] great success, both deepening and strengthening bonds between the nations who were there. We should of course, have loved to have had you with us and we often spoke of you.
I had a long letter from Miss Spence after she had seen you, and it was nice -- even to hear ↑of you↓ via Miss Spence, who is too clever to be so worldly! You probably did her good.
