Biographical Text

Mary Kenney O'Sullivan organized labor unions and meetings from within Hull-House, and later at the Denison House in Boston, MA. She and her husband moved into the Denison House in 1894. In Boston, O'Sullivan announced her forming of the National Women's Trade Union League, of which she would be made secretary, in 1903. In 1912, she left the League over a protest dispute at a textile factory. After lobbying for better conditions at in factories for employees, O'Sullivan was hired by the state in 1914 as the inspector for the Massachusetts Board of Labor and Industries. In this position, she could enforce the laws which she herself had lobbied. She retired from labor organizing in 1934. O'Sullivan died in 1943.

Kenney married Jack O'Sullivan in 1894.
