Comments at a Hull-House Tea, January 1919 (excerpt)

Times Had Changed.

Jane Addams, at a Hull House tea, was commenting on 1918 fashions. Illustrating the trend of the times she told of a poor man, who had hardly been able to clothe his wife and family until one day he managed to invent a new kind of depth bomb.

The government paid him liberally for the invention and he went to his wife with tears in his eyes.

"At last, my dear," he cried, "You will be able to buy yourself some decent clothes."

"I'll do nothing of the kind," she retorted. "I'll get the same kind the rest of the women are wearing!"
