Biographical Text

Lucy Fitch Perkins was a children's book illustrator and author. She studied at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston. While going to school, Perkins wrote children's fiction freelance for the magazine Young Folks, and when she graduated in 1886 she worked as an illustrator for the Prang Educational Company of Boston. She and her husband moved to Chicago. She began to work at the Chicago office of the Prang Educational Company when her husband struggled with finances after the Panic of 1893. In 1905, her husband was appointed the Chief Architect for the Chicago Board of Education, and he built a new house for them in Evanston, Illinois. Perkins wrote a few children's books that were not very popular, but in 1911 she wrote The Dutch Twins, which led to her writing the very popular Twins series.

Perkins married Dwight H. Perkins in 1891. The couple had two children. Perkins died in 1937 of a heart attack from coronary thrombosis.
