Biographical Text

Ernst Freund was born in New York City when his German parents were visiting the United States. He grew up in Germany, where he attended school and earned a law degree from the University of Heidelberg in 1884. From 1886-1894, he practiced law in New York. He earned a Ph.D. in political science from Columbia University in 1897. He was a political science professor at the University of Chicago from 1894-1902. He helped establish the law school at the University of Chicago, where he was a professor of law beginning in 1903. He was a founder of the Immigrants' Protective League, was the author of numerous books and articles about American law and legislation, and was a devoted advocate of social reform, women's rights, and civil liberties.

Freund became ill while his wife Harriet was undergoing surgery for an eye ailment. He died of heart disease at the same hospital where his wife was staying. Jane Addams spoke at his memorial service, which took place in the chapel on the University of Chicago campus on December 11, 1932.
