Biographical Text

Clarence Buckingham was an art collector and businessman. His father had a business of building grain elevators, and when Clarence was still a child his family moved to Chicago so his father could expand his business. His family's love for art lead Clarence to start collecting art in the 1890s. Buckingham soon became a Trustee and Director of the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as a businessman involved with J. H. Wrenn & Co. and Central Elevator Co., and the director of the Illinois Trust and Savings Bank. After his death, Buckingham's sister donated his collection to the Art Institute, as well as dedicated the Clarence Buckingham Memorial Fountain in Grant Park to him.

Buckingham died in 1913.
