Dear Miss Addams: --
We have been trying to get an organizer to work in the Chicago district, but so far have not yet succeeded in finding one whom we thought would be suitable. It is very difficult to get people to take the time to do this particular kind of thing especially those who could make proper connections with the German leaders.
We will keep working on this, however, and hope that there will be some way to help you. Call upon Carolena Wood for all the service she can render, for she is anxious to do what she can to help.
We have not received a check from Carl Beck for $5000. I find that so much of the money that is raised out there goes into the Committee at No. Moore Street, New York City, and is never [heard] from again. No one seems to know what becomes of it. I wish you would write Mr. Beck again about it, for we certainly want to get all the money in we possibly can during these next few months. It takes a month to get the things ordered and shipped abroad. The most needy time will be March, April and May.
I am [enclosing] a copy of our orders to date which will show you how we have spent the first $500,000 which we have secured for the relief work, and also how the next $500,000. is to be spent. The orders for this food are placed. The first $500,000. worth has been shipped, and the next $500,000. worth is ordered and is now being gotten ready for shipment. Mr. Hoover will ship this second $500,000. worth of food in his own name. [page 2] It will be over there and can be released to us just as rapidly as we can deposit the money against it here. We must have millions of dollars, however, to make this work go. Our most conservative estimate is $9,000,000. for food and $3,000,000. for hospital and general relief.
We are getting out some more pamphlets which we will send you within a few days.
With best wishes,
Yours sincerely,
Executive Secretary
