My dear Mr. Thomas:

[Gilbert] Beaver has doubtless reported to you concerning our efforts in Washington. We were very kindly received by Dr. Vernon Kellogg, of the Food Administration, and by Mr. Willoughby Walling, of the Red Cross. But we both came away feeling that our cause was not in a very hopeful condition.

May I send you a letter from Mr. Haskell, a returned missionary whom I have known for some time. I do wish we could get something into Bulgaria as well as into Germany. Doubtless you have heard from Mr. Haskell again, however, and my enclosed letter is not necessary, even for your information. I meant to send you the addresses of the donors in case you cared for them for your lists. Miss Mary Smith, 12 West Walton Place, Chicago, gave two hundred and fifty dollars and Mrs. Glendower Evans, 157 Walnut Street, Brookline, Massachusetts, gave fifty. [page 2]

May I assure you once more of the very great pleasure I had in meeting with the Committee and beg to remain,

Faithfully yours,

Jane Addams [signed]
