January 27. 1919.
My very dear Miss Addams:
It was a monstrous thing, to see your honored name published at the head of an alleged Pro German list. One can only remember that such inflamed ultra nationalism is an incident of war, as much as outraged women, & starved [page 2] babies, -- & are all part of reason which has led you so dauntlessly to voice the aspiration for the better way which our President is now helping to materialize by his splendid statesmanship at the Peace Conference. He feels himself to be speaking for the real America. And I am sure he feels that it is for you [page 3] & spirits like yours that he is speaking, & not for the [depraved] super patriots who are doing the real America such grievous wrong.
It was Senator Harding, was it not, who recently declared in Congress -- "whoever says that this was a war for democracy tells one big lie." Why does no one brand him as a traitor? [page 4]
I suppose you will soon be starting for the Woman's Congress. May Heaven bless you with wisdom & with courage, -- as I think Heaven has blessed you all along.
Affectionately
Elizabeth G. Evans.
