Biographical Text

Wilhelm II of Germany was the German Emperor and King of Prussia from 1888 to 1918 (the end of World War I). He forced Otto von Bismarck to resign as the German Chancellor in hopes of better solving Germany's social and political problems, though this did not end up occurring. Wilhelm II led Germany on a "New Course" in foreign affairs, which led to his support of Austria-Hungary when Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated, which in turn led to World War I. Wilhelm II abdicated after the war, and fled to the Netherlands, making him the last German emperor.

Wilhelm II married Augusta Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein 1881. They had seven children together, six sons and one daughter. After her death, he remarried to Hermine Reuss of Greiz in 1922. Wilhelm died in 1941.
