Biographical Text

Helen Keller was struck with what her doctor's called "brain fever," leaving her deaf and blind. Much of her learning was given through her private educator Anne Sullivan, who devoted her life to Keller, building a nearly 50-year relationship between them. In 1890, Keller started to take speech classes at the Horace Mann School for the Deaf in Boston, and from 1894 to 1896 she studied at the Wright-Humason School for the Deaf in New York City. In 1896 she went to the Cambridge School for Young Ladies, and after college, she began lecturing around the world. She was a member of the American Federation of the Blind, the Socialist Party, and in 1946 she became a counselor of international relations for the American Foundation for Overseas Blind. She was also a co-founder of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Keller died in 1968.
