Biographical Text

Charlotte Perkins Gilman as an activist and author. Her father abandoned his family early on, limiting Gilman's educational opportunities. After her first marriage and child's birth, Gilman suffered a severe bout of post-partum depression, which was "treated" by putting her on total rest, with no exercise or mental stimulation. This treatment helped to produce her most famous work, "The Yellow Wall-Paper," which is semi-autobiographical. Gilman ultimately divorced him and remarried. Her second husband, Houghton Gilman, was her first cousin and a supporter of her work. They were married until her suicide in 1935. Gilman was a supporter of euthanasia and decided she would prefer to die rather than live with incurable breast cancer.

Gilman married Charles Stetson in 1884. They had their only child, Katharine, within a year.
