Biographical Text

James Dana Bell was a judge and an involved member of his community. He studied at Harvard University's Law School, going on to pass the New Hampshire bar in 1865. He later moved to South Carolina where he continued working at a practice and carried out a term as Beaufort county's county judge as well. He then moved to Saint Petersburg, Florida in 1890. He practiced there until his retirement, providing services as a law attorney and notary and, for one term, Saint Petersburg's municipal judge. Shortly after moving to Florida, Bell had also bought an orange orchard which he operated and sold fruit from for a time. Outside of his career, he was active in his community. Bell served on the Saint Petersburg Board of Trade and was the president of both the local Saint Petersburg Read Room and Library Association and the trustee's board for the Samaritan Hospital. He was a member of the Reconstruction Constitutional Committee and devoted to his First Presbyterian Church.

Bell married Mary Annie Bugbee in 1868. The couple had two sons together. Bell died in 1930.
