Biographical Text

Mary Lewis Gannett studied chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania before moving to Hinsdale, Illinois with her husband. In 1889, they moved to Rochester, NY and Gannett made fast ties with many of the activist groups around her. She was the main part of the Woman’s Alliance of the Unitarian Church, the Unity Club, the Women’s Ethical Club, Rochester’s Women’s Political Club (later renamed the Political Equality Club), and more. She was an instrumental figure in opening the University of Rochester to women students and was a powerful voice in the movement for women's suffrage.

Gannett married Rev. William C. Gannett in 1887. Gannett died in 1952.
