Description

Toynbee Hall is regarded as inspiration to the American settlement movement. Canon Samuel Barnett, vicar of St. Jude's Church in Whitechapel, London argued that "residence among the poor is suggested as a simple way in which Oxford men may serve their generation" (Barnett 1885). Barnett founded Toynbee Hall alongside his philanthropist and activist wife, Henrietta with support from Oxford University. The spirit of Toynbee hall was predicated on the hope that the residence of the elite among the poor would begin to heal class division and promote economic mobility.

Today, Toynbee Hall still assists immigrants and those in need with programs including legal and financial advice, aid for handicapped children, welfare for the elderly, and help for alcoholics.
