Biographical Text

John D. Rockefeller was the co-founder of the Standard Oil Company, as well as founding the University of Chicago and Rockefeller University. With the wealth gained from Standard Oil, Rockefeller became the first established American philanthropist, using his millions in areas of scientific research, medicine, and education.

Rockefeller married Laura Celestia Spelman in 1864. They had five children together: Elizabeth, Alice, Alta, Edith, and John. Rockefeller died in 1937.
