Description

An alliance of members from the Liberal and Independent Labour parties in England founded the Union of Democratic Control (UDC) in opposition to the country's entrance into World War I, but it also sought to expose secretive diplomacy on the part of the British government. The group held its first meeting on November 17, 1914, with twenty-six people in attendance. It quickly gained momentum, however, and by 1917 there were more than 100 branches and 10,000 members, many of whom were wealthy Quakers and supporters of women's suffrage. The organization advocated for transparent foreign policy and was an early proponent of the League of Nations.
