Harriet Monroe was the founder and publisher of Poetry magazine. She supported many poets, such as T. S. Elliot, William Carlos Williams, Carl Sandburg, and others, playing an important role in the development of modern poetry. She graduated from the Visitation Academy of Georgetown, D.C in 1879. Monroe wrote poetry that was published in Century magazine, and in 1889 she became a freelance correspondent for the Chicago Tribune. She later sued the New York World for publishing a poem without her consent, which gave her the money she could use towards starting the Poetry magazine. Monroe worked without salary so the money could be used to pay contributing poets, and on the side she worked as an art critic for the Chicago Tribune. In 1914 she dedicated herself fully to Poetry, but only had a salary of fifty dollars a month, which she later raised to one hundred dollars a month. Monroe died 1936 while in Peru, attempting to climb Macchu Picchu, when the high altitudes triggered a cerebral hemorrhage.
